Tips for composing paragraphs
- Control sentence length: limit sentences 20 words or fewer,break up complex sentences and separate segments
- Emphasize important ideas: visit words, label the main idea, and place important idea first or last in the sentence
- Use active and passive voice sentences carefully:active verbs are more direct and identified the doer. Passive verbs are more tactful and they emphasize the action.
- Avoid dangling or misplaced modifiers to avoid confusion
Tips for composing paragraphs
- Direct plan: is for defining, classifying, illustrating or describing. The main sentence is followed by supporting sentences
- Pivoting plan: is appropriate when comparing and contrasting ideas. the paragraph starts with a limited sentence that offers a contrasting idea before delivering the main sentence.
- Indirect plan: is used to explain or persuade with the supporting sentences and concluded with the main sentence. It is very useful when delivering bad news.
- To build coherence paragraph you must sustain the key idea, use pronouns, dovetailing sentences and use transitional expressions.
- limit paragraph length: break up longer paragraphs if necessary
